The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s new Renovation, Repair and Painting lead law will go into effect on April 22, 2010. The new law requires contractors, property managers and others paid to replace windows or renovate residential houses, apartments and child-occupied facilities built before 1978 to be certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
According to Terry Eimen, Director of Environmental Health for the Ford-Iroquois Public Health Department, any activities such as sanding, cutting, demolition, window replacement and other renovations completed on homes built prior to 1978 are covered under the law. “Only those certified by the EPA, will be able to complete work on these older homes,” said Eimen. He said the new law is intended to protect children from leaded dust that my result from disturbing lead-based paint.
Eimen said there are a number of informational meetings scheduled around the area for property managers, landlords, contractors, code enforcement personnel and others interested in knowing more about the law. “These are not certification training sessions, only informational meetings,” he said. “When we know more about the actual training sessions we will get the information out to the media.”
