We have been receiving Questions on our Snow Policy
Iroquois County Highway Department
Snow Removal Policy
The Iroquois County Highway Department operates on one shift of personnel. It is the intent of the Iroquois County Highway Department to provide safe and reasonable winter driving conditions on County Highways for the general public. It must be noted at present time approximately 50% of snow removal on County Highways is contracted through local townships and they are not bound by the county’s policy.
Snow removal operations are a function of the maintenance department. It is under the direction of the County Engineer, Assistant County Engineer, and Maintenance Supervisor. Call out can be implemented by any one of the three above mentioned individuals.
Snow removal operations will normally commence after an accumulation of two inches of snow. It is the intent of the Iroquois County Highway Department to have one pass on all county maintained routes by 7:00 Am., Monday thru Friday, and 9:00 am Saturday and Sunday.
Normal work hours are 7:30am to 4:00pm. For the purpose of snow removal hours may begin as early as 4:00am and if conditions exist, end at 8:00 pm. It is the intent of the Iroquois County Highway Department to never have an individual work more than a 16 hour shift without a minimum of 8 hours time off between shifts.
The Iroquois County Highway Department does not have a “bare pavement” policy. First priority is to plow and make passable all routes. Second is to apply a traction material to bridges, curves, and intersections that are ice covered. This material may be sand, CA16’s, or a mixture. This application may be subject to availability and or weather conditions.
It is the position of the Iroquois County Highway Department that there can and may exist conditions that may require the suspension of snow removal operations for the safety of both the Iroquois County Highway Department employees and the general public. Some such conditions could be sustained high wind with blowing snow, limiting visibility, or a prolonged ice storm. Work will resume when conditions subside to allow for the safe removal of snow and ice. If operations are halted for more than 24 hours the county engineer will notify 94.1 WGFA and have a notice broadcast.
It is the intent of the Iroquois County Highway Department to maintain the County Highway system as efficiently and economically as feasibly possibly. Inconvenience to motorists while regrettable is unavoidable. Motorists must use extreme caution when driving in inclement weather. This policy in no way guarantees the safety on the public while operating their vehicle.

…Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 9 PM this evening to 10 am CST Wednesday…
The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for snow…which is in effect from 9 PM this evening to 10 am CST Wednesday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.
* Timing…accumulating snow will develop this evening and
continue through the day Tuesday before ending Tuesday night.
Severe blowing and drifting snow…with possible ground blizzard
conditions in rural areas…can be expected Tuesday night into
Wednesday morning.
* Accumulations…snowfall will generally be light to moderate in
intensity…however the very long duration of the snowfall will
result in storm total snowfall by Tuesday night of 5 to 9 inches.
* Hazards…in addition to the prolonged duration of accumulating
snowfall…northwest winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph with
gusts to 40 mph Tuesday night and continue into Wednesday
morning resulting in severe blowing and drifting snow in open
areas.
* Impacts…travel is likely to be significantly hampered during
the snow storm tonight through Tuesday night. Due to the long
duration of light to moderate snowfall even major roads and
highways may become snow covered. Blowing snow will likely
result in near white out conditions and drifting across roads
Tuesday night into Wednesday morning with travel becoming
extremely dangerous…particularly in open areas.
Precautionary/preparedness actions…
A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that accumulating snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities…and use caution while driving.

County Clerk Lisa Fancher announced effective February 2nd, a new election law will take effect. Public Act 95-699 requires that voters be notified when they have undervoted. It is your right to undervote for any office, and that right has not changed.
However, now if you undervote or overvote for any race, your ballot will be kicked back and you will see on the LCD screen, which is located on the voting device, the races you overvoted or undervoted. An undervote, for this purpose, is defined as a completely blank voted race only. This allows you to correct your ballot, if your undervote was not intentional. If you inadvertently overvoted, you can have your ballot spoiled and receive a new one. If you wish to have your ballot accepted as is, an election judge will assist you in activating the override button and your ballot will be returned through the device and counted. ONLY OVERVOTED races will not be counted.
Election Judges are well trained and attend classes prior to every election. They are there to assist you. This law is in no way a suggestion or recommendation that you vote for all offices. If you choose to undervote one or more offices, all other validly cast votes will be properly counted.
If you should have questions concerning any of this, please feel free to contact us at the County Clerk’s Office at 815-432-6960.
Thank you for your patience in the implementation of this new law.
